Cultural tourism, urban tourism, monumental tourism, funerary tourism, ethnographic tourism, shopping tourism, mystic tourism, nature tourism, mass tourism, individual tourism, adventure tourism, business tourism … The list of the different types of tourism seems endless. That little word has become an indispensable part of everyone’s lives. But what exactly is tourism? When did it arise? And how does it influence our daily lives?

city-of-arts-and-sciences-valencia

First, we should carefully define what we understand as the concept of tourism. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who “travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for more than twenty-four hours and not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited”. But when exactly did tourism arise?

It seems that humanity is made only for sightseeing because in ancient times existed the first types of tourism. In classical Greece leisure was very important and the men dedicated their free time to culture, entertainment, religion and sport. A good example is the Olympics, where thousands of people went to have a good time. It was a type of tourism that mixed religion with sport. Also during the Roman Empire humanity was devoted to tourism: hot springs, Roman theatres, great shows… As you can see, the Romans knew how to enjoy life.

During the middle ages there emerged a new kind of travel: the religious pilgrimages. The pilgrimage had existed before, but it spread at this time around Christianity and Islam and its believers went on pilgrimages in large numbers. Some of the most famous are the pilgrimages to the Holy Land from Venice and also the Camino de Santiago. In the modern age the first hotels appeared and the great maritime expeditions by the Spanish, British and Portuguese land discoverers that aroused interest and curiosity to travel.

However, one can say that tourism has grown tremendously in the Contemporary Age. Major changes in society, in industry, in technology and in our lifestyles have helped to achieve what we know today as tourism: a great offer for travelling around the world. The tourism sector has an impressive offer, starting with cultural tourism, scientific tourism, industrial or ethnographic tourism, passing through nature tourism, rural or bird tourism, to sports, adventure or space tourism. Currently you do not need to spend too much time in finding the best tourism offers as there are plenty!

This attractive theme park aims to put on show the widest variety of ecosystems that represent marine life on the planet along with the creation of marine and terrestrial ecosystems that have lived in coastal areas of different climatic areas of the earth. There are ten subjects spread over a total of twenty-nine tanks that recreate different ecosystems. All the ecosystems reproduce faithfully the flora and the fauna of the sea beds and the corresponding seashores.

First we visit the reproduction of the Mediterranean Sea, particularly the fauna of the Iberian Peninsula. There are seven aquariums where you can see different marine organisms that vary in depth. The huge glass dome that is completely surrounded by water and where thousands of colourful fishes swim around you is truly amazing.

There is also an area that represents the tropical waters, imitating the coast of California and the Izu Peninsula in Japan. You can walk through a 70 metre long tunnel under the water, surrounded by many rare species of fishes: it is a journey that begins in Europe’s coasts and reaches the tropical seas. There is a section dedicated to the curious jellyfish and the curious seahorses. There are many tropical fish here too.

The islands area is a mandatory stop: there you’ll see the sea lions. In the Artic area, with the giant igloo, you will see the behaviour of the white whale. In the adjacent area, which is immersed in the Antarctic, there are funny penguins that swim and play amongst the rocks.

If you are frightened by the idea of seeing a shark, you shouldn’t go to the Ocean area. In the two towers under the water, there is a 30 metre long tunnel, where there are main species of these huge, awesome predators along with huge rays, etc. You can also visit the beautiful reproduction of the Red Sea, an incredible area of our planet, and the incredible Dolfinarium (the largest in Europe). It consists of 5 swimming pools where you can admire the spectacle of these magnificent mammals.

Do you like nature? Do you want to see unknown marine species? If so, rent your Apartments in Valencia. Here you will find fun, sea, sun and amazing underwater walkways.

March has finally arrived and coming with it one of the most awaited Valencian festivals: the Fallas. This is one of the most famous celebrations in Spain, next to San Fermin and Easter. The Valencia Fallas are world famous. Thousands of tourists come to the city with the unique intention of enjoying such feasts.

After the Cridà (the opening speech) on February 22nd, the Fallas can begin. In fact they’ve already begun! Once again, the firecrackers, the fireworks and the bonfires will crowd the streets of the city. Until March 19th, the Town Hall Square will host a daily Mascletà shot, a pyrotechnic deafening spectacle characterized by the synchronized explosion of thousands of rockets.

Valencia Fallas

Besides the daily mascletà, a myriad of events are held such as parades, fireworks, concerts, the famous flower offering to the Virgen de los Desamparados and, of course, the highlight of the festival, the Ninots’ cremà after having been on show to the public for days.

The Ninots are huge human dolls which satirize real life people and situations such as famous people and politics. In early February, each Fallas committee participates in a ninots exhibition. Thus, through a popular vote, the most voted figure will be pardoned and won’t meet its fate at the cremà (the act of setting fire to the Ninots) on the night of February 19th. The winning ninot will form part of the Fallas’s Museum.

Up to 600 Fallas’ monuments are spread around throughout the city. The Fallas are grouped into separate sections, which highlight the Special Branch and the Town Hall Square, which stays out of the contest.

As a preamble to the big Fallas day, the night from 18th March to 19th March, the Nit del Foc (Fire Night) is celebrated. This is an impressive pyrotechnic festival where they proudly put on a show of the best fireworks in the city.

One of the most important acts of the Fallas is an offering to the Mare de Deu Virgin: the Fallas commissions and the falleras perform an offering to the virgin.

Famous Spanish bands such as Taxi, Presuntos Implicados and Seguridad Social will be performing during these days.

Are you going to miss it? The entire city of Valencia becomes something unique and different. Rent Apartments in Valencia and enjoy one of the most impressive and fun festivals in the world.

Valencia’s gastronomy is based on a healthy Mediterranean cuisine, characterized by a wide range of fresh and natural products. It is a cuisine with a mountain of flavours and textures: delicious seafood, fruits, vegetables and very good wines. But if there is a special dish that defines Valencian cuisine, it would be “paella”, which is also the best known Spanish food.

Valencian Paella

Despite it culinary diversity, the rice monopolises most menus in Valencia, becoming the absolute protagonist. But the repertoire of Valencian rice dishes is not a monotonous succession of paellas – Rice is prepared in a myriad of ways! Some cooking experts maintain the original paella recipe – the one that is made with chicken, snails and vegetables (Paella a la Valenciana), but is has been transformed in many different ways since rice will take almost any ingredient: vegetables, meats and especially fish and seafood together.
The most consumed paella is Paella Marinera, prepared with rice, saffron, sea-food, fish and vegetables. Often chicken is added to it (Paella Mixta). The original paella has thus derived into many other different dishes such as: “arròs negre” (rice in squid’s ink), “arròs a banda” (rice with seafood), “arròs amb fesols i naps” (with haricot beans and turnip), “arròs al forn” (oven-baked rice) and “arròs amb bledes” (rice with chard). “Fideuà” is similar to paella, but the rice has been replaced by noodles.

Valencia’s cuisine is not only based on rice though. Other culinary specialities are “all-i-pebre d’anguiles” (garlic, pepper and eel stew), “suc de peix” (made of fish, oil, garlic, onion and parsley), “esgarrat” (roasted red pepper, cod and olive oil) and “titaína” (a recipe made of vegetables, pine kernels, spices and tuna).

Valencia also offers a wide variety of sweets inherited from Moorish culture, such as “arnadí”, made with pumpkin preserves, yams and almonds, or the classical pumpkin fritters with chocolate other delights are the “rosegons”, the “arrop i talladetes”, or the pastries made of the extract of a kind of sweet potato called a “boniato” and “cabello de angel”, made from the extract of a type of local melon. In addition, Valencia has high quality fruits, in which oranges play a major role and are also exported to the rest of Spain.

The Valencian drink par excellence is the “horchata”, or tiger nut milk, a delicious ice cold beverage mostly consumed in summertime. The other typical Valencian drink is “Agua de Valencia”(Valencian Water), a very agreeable cocktail made from freshly squeezed orange juice and Cava. Valencia can also boast of having an excellent wine selection – white from the Alto Turia and Serranía areas, or red from Requena, Utiel and Campo de Llíria.

Valencia is definitely one of the great cuisine capitals. Travel to the city and rent Valencia Apartments for the best accommodation. And remember, you should taste all the different types of delicious Paella!
